Description:
Transportation Inspectors look at the equipment that move people or things. That could be trucks, freight trains, airplanes, and ships.
Duties:
• Inspect trucks and what they are carrying to make sure everything is safe and working properly.
• Teach crews of ships and freight trains how to properly stow cargo.
• Make sure that all health and safety rules are being followed.
• Measure ships' holds and decide how much they can carry and how much fuel they will need.
• Write reports.
Where and When:
• Rail yards
• Shipping ports
• Airports
• Truck weigh stations
• Transportation inspectors work outside most of the time, but they do spend a part of the day in the office.
What or Who They Work With:
• Computers
• Tape measures
• Scales
• Cameras
• Sampling equipment
• Chemicals
Education and Training:
• Bachelor's degree, but some people have an Associate's degree and work experience.
• You need to have good communication skills.
• Take classes in safety and how to use equipment.
