
Description:
Water Resource Specialists make sure that water is safe, clean, and plentiful.
Duties:
• Sample and test water for chemicals
• Help others conserve water
• Find causes of water pollution
Where and When:
• Most work for the state, local, or U.S. government.
• Many work for big engineering firms.
• Some work for smaller companies and businesses.
• Many new water resource specialists spend a lot of time outside or "in the field".
• More experienced water resource specialists may work most of the time in a lab or office.
• Some often take field trips to different places.
• They work in all kinds of weather.
• They work when it is very hot, very cold, or in between.
• Some may work long hours traveling or writing reports.
What or Who They Work With:
• Binocular light microscope
• Fishing nets
• Water flow meters
• Nitrate meters
• Water samplers and test kits
• Science software
• Map software
• Word processing software
• Many work with other conservation scientists and technicians.
• They also work with business people or government workers.
• Many work with engineers in large engineering firms.
Education and Training:
• Most have a Master's degree (6 years of college).
• Few have a Bachelor's degree (4 years of college).
• Those who want to teach or conduct research at a college or university need a Ph.D. (8 years or more of college).
• Most require training or education in engineering.
• This job requires classes in science, technology, engineering and math.
