Description:
Correctional officer oversee arrested people.
Duties:
• Enforce rules and keep orders within jails or prisons.
• Monitor prisoners and conduct head counts.
• Check cells, locks, widow bars, grills, doors and gates.
• Record and report.
• Use weapons.
Where and When:
• They work in jails, reformatories, or prisons.
• Usually work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, on rotating shifts, so they may work all hours of the day and night, weekends, and holidays.
What or Who They Work With:
• Prisoners
• Handcuffs and leg irons.
• Jailers
Education and Training:
• At least a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Some require college credits or military experience.
• At least a bachelor's degree or 3 years of full-time field experience for working in federal prisons.
