
Description:
Assess injuries, administer emergency medical care, and remove trapped individuals.
Duties:
• Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons before they arrive at a hospital.
• Operate equipment that help improve breathing or pulse.
• Assess nature and extent of illness or injury.
• Administer drugs, orally or by injection, or perform intravenous procedures under a physician's direction.
• Drive mobile intensive care unit (ambulance) to specified location.
Where and When:
• Works in emergency situations wherever they occur.
• May work irregular hours.
What or Who They Work With:
• Works with sick or injured people needing emergency medical care.
• Works with other emergency responderss, hospital personnel, and doctors.
• Works with first aid and medical equipment.
Education and Training:
• Most have a Post-Secondary Certificate.
• Some have on-the-job training.
