
Description:
Diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illness, independently or as part of a healthcare team.
Duties:
• Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses.
• Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests, such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays).
• Diagnose or treat chronic or acute health problems.
• Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
• Advocate for accessible health care that minimizes environmental health risks.
Where and When:
• Work in hospitals and other healthcare settings.
• May work irregular hours.
What or Who They Work With:
• Work with sick or injured patients requiring medical care.
• Work with Nursing Aids and Doctors to coordinate patient services.
• Work with medical testing supplies and medicine.
Education and Training:
• Most have a Master's Degree.
• Most have at least two years of related work experience.
• Few have on-the-job training.
