
Description:
Umpires and referees attend sport events and make sure teams follow the rules of the game.
Duties:
• Make sure rules of the game are followed.
• Judge competitions (such as horse shows).
• Keep track of time.
• Use hand signals to show what players are doing in the game
• Start races and competitions
• Teach the rules of a sport
Where and When:
• Most work at places where sports are held such as gyms, fields, or arenas.
• They may also go to horse shows, schools, colleges, and large stadiums.
• Many work part time for youth sports.
• Some work full time for sports in college or professional sporting events.

• Stopwatch
• Hand Signals
• Microphone
• Players
• Teams
• Other referees or umpires
Education and Training:
• Most have a high school diploma or GED.
• Some have less than a high school diploma.
• Some may have a Bachelor's degree (4 years).
• Most who get full time jobs will have the Bachelor's degree and experience being an umpire or referee.
