
Description:
Ship pilots steer ships safely in and out of harbors,lakes, and bays. They dock the ship and set a course for the ship to follow.
Duties:
• Set a course for the ship to follow
• Control the speed of a ship
• Tell crew members what to do to steer the ship
• Write ship logs to tell about the trip
• Talk to others on the shore for ship operations
• Check equipment and materials
• Help rescue others in the water
Where and When:
• Work on ships in the sea and ocean.
• Some work on cruise ships, container ships, ferries, tanker ships
• Most work day or night both during the week and weekends
What or Who They Work With:
• Ship to shore radios
• VHF radiotelephones
• Tugboats
• GPS systems
• Mechanical hoists
• Route software to tell ships where to go and mapp a course
• Crew members
• Captains
• Passengers
Education and Training:
Most have a high school diploma.Many have some college classes.Many take an apprenticeship program to learn how to pilot a ship.All must have a
