Marriage and family therapists help families and couples who might be having problems. These problems could be having trouble getting along, worries about money, or more serious issues. They work with people (called clients) to find better ways to communicate and to deal with a situation. In doing so, they modify people’s perceptions and behaviors, enhance communication and understanding among family members, and help to prevent family and individual crises.

• Ask questions that help clients talk about their feelings and their problems.
• Suggest ways that might may things better.
• Teach skills that will help clients get along and to improve their situation.
• Take notes and keep good records.
• Make decisions about whether a client should see a different type of counselor or doctor.
• Work with other counselors to make sure that a client is getting the best possible counseling.

• They usually have offices, but they could also work in a clinic or treatment center location.
• They work normal business hours but frequently have to work evenings and weekends to meet with clients.

• They may work with individuals, families, couples, and groups.

• Video equipment

• Master's Degree in counseling
• Some have Doctorate Degree (when you can be called "Doctor")
• You need to have a license from the state to be able to see clients.
