Urologists

Special Requirements


 

To become licensed as a doctor of medicine in Virginia, an applicant must meet the following requirements:


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1.     To enter medical school, students must have a Bachelor’s degree with a high grade point average in a premedical program or other related major
2.     They must pass a national examination (MCAT) and undergo extensive interviews.
3.     Once accepted to a medical school they must be a graduate of an approved or accredited medical school or school of Osteopathy
4.     Upon completion of medical school, they must enter several years of postgraduate training including internship and residency during which they receive training specific to internal medicine.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

1.     Must have one year of postgraduate training as an intern or resident in a hospital or approved health care facility
2.     Graduates of non-approved institutions must complete 3 years of internship or residency
3.     Additional training is required for specializing in a subspecialty field
 
EXAM:
 
1.     Must pass Components I and II of the Federation Licensing Exam (FLEX)
2.     Must pass Steps 1,2, and 3 of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) for licensure in Virginia.
3.     To take exam, applicant must submit documentary evidence of degree and a complete chronological record of all professional activities since graduation, giving locations, dates, and type of service provided.
 
LICENSE RENEWAL:

Every licensee who intends to maintain an active license shall renew his license biennially during his birth month, meet the continued competency requirements, and pay to the board the renewal fee.
 
SPECIALTIES:

M.D.s and D.O.s seeking board certification in a specialty may spend up to 7 years in residency training, depending on the specialty. A final examination immediately after residency or after 1 or 2 years of practice is also necessary for certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The ABMS represents 24 boards related to medical specialties ranging from allergy and immunology to urology. The AOA has approved 18 specialty boards, ranging from anesthesiology to surgery. For certification in a subspecialty, physicians usually need another 1 to 2 years of residency.

Certification Requirements
 
As found in the Information for Applicants and Candidates handbook for certification, an applicant for certification by the American Board of Urology must:
  • Be a graduate of a medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or a school of osteopathy approved by the Bureau of Professional Education of the American Osteopathic Association
  • Complete a urology residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada [RCPS(C)]
The American Board of Urology mandates a minimum of 5 clinical years of postgraduate medical training. The training must include:
  • 48 months in an ACGME-approved urology program, and
  • 3 months of general surgery in an ACGME-approved surgical program, and
  • 3 months of core surgical training (e.g. intensive care unit, trauma, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, etc.) in an ACGME- approved surgical program, and
  • 6 months of other rotations, not including dedicated research time, in an ACGME- or RCPS(C)-approved core surgery program
All rotations listed above that are not part of the core urology training must have been approved by the candidate’s program director. As part of the core urology training, the candidate must have completed at least 12 months as a chief resident in urology with the appropriate clinical responsibility and under supervision in institutions that are part of an ACGME-approved program.
 
Certification Process
 
Applicants approved by the Board to enter the certification process must complete both a Qualifying (Part 1) Examination and, after passing this examination, a subsequent Certifying (Part 2) Examination to become certified. Assessment of clinical practice through review of practice logs and peer review will also be carried out prior to admission to the Certifying (Part 2) Examination. Certification must be achieved within five years of the successful completion of residency.
 
Applicants who have not successfully completed the certification process within fi ve years of the completion of their urological residency will be required to pass a written Preliminary Examination before being permitted to re-enter the certification process. The Preliminary Examination is given each November in conjunction with the annual AUA In-Service Examination.
 
After passing the Preliminary Examination, the applicant must take the Qualifying (Part 1) Examination one of the next two times it is offered. Any such candidate who fails to do so must successfully retake the Preliminary Examination to proceed with certification. Contact the Board office prior to the August 15 deadline for more Preliminary Examination information.
