Special Requirements


Special Requirements

To become licensed as a doctor of medicine in Virginia, an applicant must meet the following requirements:


EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

   •   To enter medical school, students must have a Bachelor’s degree with a high grade point average in a premedical program or other related major
   •   They must pass a national examination (MCAT) and undergo extensive interviews.
   •   Once accepted to a medical school they must be a graduate of an approved or accredited medical school or school of Osteopathy
   •   Upon completion of medical school, they must enter several years of postgraduate training including internship and residency during which they receive training specific to internal medicine.


EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

   •   Must have one year of postgraduate training as an intern or resident in a hospital or approved health care facility
   •   Graduates of non-approved institutions must complete 3 years of internship or residency in psychiatry
   •   Additional training is required for specializing in a subspecialty field such as dermatology.


EXAM:

   •   Must pass Components I and II of the Federation Licensing Exam (FLEX)
   •   Must pass Steps 1,2, and 3 of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) for licensure in Virginia.
   •   To take exam, applicant must submit documentary evidence of degree and a complete chronological record of all professional activities since graduation, giving locations, dates, and type of service provided.


LICENSE RENEWAL:

   •  
Every licensee who intends to maintain an active license shall renew his license biennially during his birth month, meet the continued competency requirements, and pay to the board the renewal fee.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

   •   Must be at least eighteen years of age
   •   Must be of good moral character

·      Step 1: $505
·      Step 2CK: $505
·      Step 2CS: $1075
·         Step 3: $705

OTHER FEES:
·         The application fee for licensure in medicine, osteopathic medicine, and podiatry - $302
·         The fee for a temporary authorization to practice medicine - $25
·         The application fee for a limited professorial or fellow - $55
·         The annual renewal fee - $35
·         Additional fee for late renewal of licensure - $15
·         The application fee for a limited license to interns and residents - $55
·         The fee for a duplicate wall certificate - $15
·         The fee for a duplicate license - $5
·         The fee for biennial renewal for licensure in medicine, osteopathic medicine and podiatry - $337 
·         An additional fee for processing a late renewal application within one renewal cycle - $115 
·         The fee for requesting reinstatement of licensure or certification or for requesting reinstatement after any petition to reinstate the certificate or license of any person has been denied - $2,000
·         The fee for reinstatement of a license issued by the Board of Medicine that has expired for a period of two years or more - $382 (in addition to the late fee)
·         The fee for a letter of verification of licensure to another jurisdiction - $10
·         The fee for certification of grades to another jurisdiction by the board - $25
·         The fee for biennial renewal of an inactive license - $168 (due in the licensee's birth month)
·         The fee for an application or for the biennial renewal of a restricted volunteer license - $75
